"I use the app for five minutes in the morning and then I ignore it for the rest of the day."

This isn't a training problem. It's a design problem. Most construction software was designed by people who work in offices, for people who work in offices.
What the Field Actually Needs
Field workers have specific constraints that office software ignores:
One hand. You're often holding something, talking to someone, or standing in direct sunlight. The app needs to work with your thumb.
Gloves. Touch targets need to be large. Precision interactions don't work.
Offline. Half of job sites have spotty connectivity. An app that requires a connection is useless underground, in a basement, or at a rural site.
Speed. If a daily report takes 15 minutes, it won't get done. If it takes 3 minutes, it will.

The Features That Actually Get Used
When we look at field user adoption data, the pattern is clear. Features with high adoption share certain characteristics: they replace something the crew was already doing (paper logs, text messages), they're faster than the alternative, and they don't require remembering to do something — they prompt.
GPS clock-in/out replaces paper time cards and takes 2 seconds. Adoption: 94%.
One-tap punch list item flagging replaces a text message to the PM. Adoption: 87%.
Photo documentation with automatic project and location tagging replaces emailed photos with no context. Adoption: 81%.
Daily report templates that pre-populate from clock-in data and scheduled work replace a blank form. Adoption: 76%.
What Doesn't Get Used
Anything requiring navigation through multiple screens. Anything that works differently in the field vs. the office. Anything that doesn't work offline. Anything that requires typing.
The Cost of Low Field Adoption
When field crews don't use the software, the data doesn't exist. When the data doesn't exist, the PM is chasing it. The daily report is late. The RFI isn't documented. The punch list item disappears.
This creates a feedback loop: field crews don't use the tool because it's annoying, so PMs compensate by chasing information manually, so PMs don't have time to improve field workflows, so field adoption stays low.
Breaking the loop requires software that earns its place in the field — not software that's mandatory.
What Good Looks Like
The best field operations software does three things: it's faster than the alternative, it works without a connection, and it gives the field crew something back for their data entry (schedule visibility, documented approvals, automatic distribution of their daily reports).
